As summer approaches or that beach vacation is on the horizon, you may want to ensure you're feeling confident and ready to show off your skin. Bikini waxing is a popular method for hair removal that offers longer-lasting results compared to shaving. Here's how to prepare for your first waxing session to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.


Understanding Bikini Waxing


Before diving into preparation, it's essential to understand what bikini waxing entails. Unlike shaving, which cuts hair at the skin's surface, waxing removes hair from the root, allowing for slower regrowth. Many women choose bikini waxing because it typically results in softer, finer hair when it grows back. Moreover, waxing can keep the area smoother for longer, often lasting 3 to 6 weeks between sessions.

Preparing Your Skin for a Bikini Wax at Pure Waxing

Getting your skin ready before your bikini wax appointment is key to a smooth, comfortable experience with lasting results. Here’s how to prep like a pro:


Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before Your Appointment

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps prevent ingrown hairs. I recommend using a gentle body scrub specially formulated for sensitive areas, like the Bushbalm Sugar Scrub I carry. This scrub softens and dissolves as you use it, gently hydrating your skin with natural oils.

While exfoliating mitts can be an option, it’s best to first use a scrub designed for delicate skin. Mitts can sometimes be too abrasive, especially if used vigorously, which can cause irritation or inflammation.


✨ Moisturize Smartly

When it comes to pre- and post-wax skincare, smart moisturizing makes all the difference.


While a Bushbalm exfoliating scrub is an amazing first step — helping to buff away dead skin, prevent ingrowns, and improve texture — it doesn’t provide the deep, lasting hydration your skin needs on its own. That’s where a nourishing oil comes in.


For the best results, use your scrub in the shower and follow up with a lightweight, pH-balanced oil like Bushbalm Oil or Koochi Oil. Both are specially formulated for intimate skin and help lock in moisture without clogging pores or causing irritation.


Daily use of this combo keeps skin soft, hydrated, and bump-free, and is key to maintaining results between waxes.


Just a note: on the day of your appointment, skip heavy lotions or oils, as they can affect how well the wax adheres. But outside of waxing days, pairing scrub + oil is your skin’s power duo.


Hair Length Matters

For the wax to grip effectively, your hair should be at least ¼ inch long — about the length of a grain of rice. However, I recommend aiming for ½ inch, especially if your hair is coarse, to get the best, most comfortable results. This usually means waiting at least 2-4 weeks after shaving or 4 weeks after waxing.

A clean, professional environment is non-negotiable. Your waxer should always use fresh gloves, disinfect tools, and follow strict hygiene protocols. I only use high-quality, hypoallergenic hard and soft waxes and maintain a spotless studio to ensure your safety and comfort.

You deserve to feel completely at ease. A calm, welcoming space can make all the difference, especially if you’re new to waxing. I’ll walk you through the process, answer your questions, and never rush. You’ll be in expert hands every step of the way.


  • What to Expect During Your Appointment

    Feeling a little nervous about your wax? Totally normal! Knowing what to expect can help ease any anxiety. At Pure Waxing, I always aim to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.


  • 💬 Before Your Appointment

    You’ll receive an online consent and consultation form by email to fill out before you arrive. It covers any skin sensitivities, allergies, or personal preferences so I can tailor the service to your needs. If you have questions or concerns, you can always message me or ask in person — I’m here to help!


  • 🛏️ Getting Comfortable

    You’ll be welcomed into my clean, private studio and asked to lie down on the waxing bed. If you’re getting a bikini or bikini line wax — like the one included with a full leg wax — you can wear your own underwear, or I can provide a disposable bikini thong upon request. These are recommended to give better access to the area and help avoid getting wax on your own.

    Before we start, you’ll be offered an intimate refreshing wipe from Bushbalm to cleanse the area and ensure your skin is prepped for your waxing service.


  • 💡 Pro Tip: If it’s your first time waxing and you’re preparing for a trip or giving birth, it’s best to start a few sessions ahead of time. It typically takes 3–4 waxes to get your hair growth on the same cycle. This helps your skin adjust to waxing, reduces sensitivity, and improves your overall results.


  • Keep in mind that some hairs may not have reached the surface yet at the time of your wax. These can pop through a few days later, which is completely normal — especially during your first few waxes — and another reason why consistency and good pre/post care are key.


  • 🔥 The Waxing Process

    I use high-quality hard and soft waxes designed for all skin types, including sensitive areas. A warm wax is applied to the area, then gently removed to pull the hair from the root. You might feel a quick sting, but it passes fast — and I always work with care and efficiency to minimize discomfort.


  • 🌿 Aftercare Guidance

    Once we’re done, I’ll walk you through simple aftercare steps to protect your skin and extend your results. This includes avoiding tight clothing, workouts, heat, sun exposure, sexual activity, and swimming for at least 24–48 hours. You’ll also get personalized product recommendations if needed — I carry gentle, effective solutions to help prevent bumps and ingrowns and keep your skin feeling amazing.

Aftercare Tips for Best Results

Taking care of your skin after waxing is essential for preventing irritation, reducing bumps, and getting the smoothest, longest-lasting results. Here’s how to care for your skin post-wax:


👖 Keep it Bare

For the first 24–48 hours, avoid tight clothing, friction, hot tubs, swimming pools, and tanning beds. This gives your skin time to breathe and calm down, reducing the risk of irritation or breakouts.


💧 Moisturize

Hydration is key! Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer — or better yet, one specifically formulated for post-wax care. At Pure Waxing, I carry intimate-safe oils and soothing serums that help calm redness, nourish the skin, and prevent bumps in sensitive areas.


For an extra boost of hydration and healing, you can also apply a hydrogel vajacial mask after your wax. These cooling masks are perfect for calming the skin, reducing inflammation, and leaving the area soft and refreshed.


🔥 Avoid Heat

Skip hot showers, steamy baths, saunas, or intense workouts for at least 24 hours. Excess heat can aggravate freshly waxed skin and lead to inflammation.


🧼 Exfoliate (Gently)

Once the skin has settled — usually after 3–5 days — begin gently exfoliating 2–3 times a week. This helps prevent ingrown hairs and keeps the skin soft and smooth. I recommend a sugar scrub made with hydrating oils or chemical exfoliants like Bushbalm’s Roller Rescue or Radiant Toner Pads for best results.
